Apprenticeships / Traineeships
Looking for an apprenticeship? – We can help.
Whether you’re a school student, a school leaver, a job seeker or looking for a career change, we can help.
Who are we?
We employ apprentices and trainees.
We’re not a job search agency, or personnel agency that just links you up with an employer
– WE ARE AN EMPLOYER!
We currently employ 700 apprentices and trainees – so we’ve helped a few people get apprenticeships over the last 20 years – about 3000 apprentices and trainees across most industries!
In fact, today we are the largest youth employer in regional WA, and the second largest Group Training Company in the state.
What do we do?
We employ apprentices and trainees and then “host” them out to industry so the apprentices can get their relevant industry experience.
We manage the apprenticeship – if there is insufficient work for the host to sustain the apprenticeship we have the ability to move an apprentice to another host – thus ensuring full employment and a completion of the trade.
We monitoring performance and provide counselling - we carry out regular visits to ensure apprentices and trainee are progressing and to identify any areas of concern.
Why are we successful?
Simple. We know what’s going on – we constantly talk to industry.
What do we mean by constantly?
With 700 apprentices to manage, an RTO to run, plus the Australian Apprenticeship Centre, our staff make more than 10,000 industry visits per year!
Plus we offer a great service at a competitive price – after all, 700 apprentices and trainees means more than 500 industry employers! – so we must be doing something right!
What does it mean for you?
You can use our expertise. We know the industry, we know the jobs, and we know our community.
So - we've done all the work!
As one of the largest employers in the state – your BEST chance of getting a quality apprentice or trainee position is with us.
How do you apply?
You need to complete an application form, indicating which occupation you are interested in. Attach copies of your latest school reports or TAFE results, resume and work references. You and your parent/ guardian should sign your application.
Just go to our vacancies page.
Not sure what an apprenticeship or traineeship is, or what trade to apply for?
Why not check out apprenticeships or traineeships information on our website or go to the APPRENTICENTRE website for a comprehensive explanation of current apprenticeships and traineeships in WA.
What happens to your application?
We keep applications on file and refer to them when a position becomes available. Applications are kept on file for six months.
If a position becomes available and we think your application is suitable, then you may be invited to take part in our selection process. This includes aptitude tests (year 10 level), referee checks and interviews.
When do vacancies occur?
A position becomes available when a business tells us that they would like to hire an apprentice or trainee. Such vacancies occur at any time.
Why do you need to nominate your preferred trade?
When you start an apprenticeship you are making a commitment. An apprenticeship is usually a four-year employment contract. You need to convince us that you’re keen to do a particular trade.
It’s a good idea to do your “homework”. Your application is more likely to be successful, if you have good knowledge of what you will be doing on a day-to-day basis.
Talk to people in the occupation or visit the workplace. Be sure to ask questions. It is important that you get a complete, realistic picture of the occupation so that you can make a fair judgment about whether or not it is for you.
The interview process
The first round interviews are with GTSW field officers. This is your chance to tell us why you believe you are the best person for the position and also allow you to find out a bit more about the position being advertised
GTSW will provide your details to our clients. These clients are called Host Employers and they will then select suitable applicants to interview. These interviews are usually conducted by our Host Employer at their business premises, and they are your chance to tell the Host Employer why you believe you are the best person for the position.
You may be asked to attend a small amount of work experience to assist the employer in making a decision. (this should be no more than 5 days).
What happens after you are offered an Apprenticeship or Traineeship?
Once you accept a position you must attend an induction – with your parent or guardian.
The induction is to ensure that the Employee and Parent/Guardian are fully aware of their responsibilities in relation to the Apprentice/Traineeship Agreement, our company policies, legal requirements, Health and Safety regulations, and performance expectations.
The induction process will include:
· A medical test
· Occupational Health and Safety requirements
· Administration details
Once you start, you are given a 3-month probation, and you are one of us!
